New Qualification in Emergency Care for First Responders

We have listened to our customers and have responded! After a year of research and a further year of development, we are ready and proud to launch our new award in Emergency Care for First Responders.

This new pre-hospital care qualification is aimed at learners working in roles where their primary or secondary focus involves giving emergency medical care as the first responder on the scene of an accident or emergency.

It is ideal for those learners who need a wider level of knowledge than standard first aid at work qualifications. Learners may be in roles such as security operatives, close protection officers, event medical operatives, cabin crew and community first responders, among others.

In line with industry guidance, the qualification supports first responders for a period of 3 years, at which point learners will need to requalify.

What does the qualification cover?
The qualification covers topics such as assessing and responding to incidents, CPR for adults, children and infants, therapeutic oxygen therapy and catastrophic bleeding. It also covers assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury or illness such as chest injuries, spinal injuries, heart attack and anaphylaxis.

How is this qualification delivered?
Courses leading to the qualification must take a minimum of 30 contact hours over at least 4 days. Requalification courses must take a minimum of 18 contact hours over 3 days. Blended learning is permitted as long as the specified requirements are abided by.

To effectively deliver and assess the qualification, centres must have various equipment and resources in place, which are listed in full within the qualification specification. In addition, centres must not exceed the ratio of 1 tutor or assessor to 8 learners.

How is this qualification assessed?
This qualification is assessed by the following two methods:

  1. Practical assessment – Learners must demonstrate practical skills in first aid and emergency care which is captured on a practical assessment matrix.
  2. Theory assessment – Learners must answer 55 multiple-choice questions which are internally marked by the assessor.

The price of registration and certification per learner is £24.50
