Brass bands, trombones and Oompa Loompas

Mary Saddleworth Whit MarchHABC Quality Assurance Auditor Mary Golder recently took part in a marching band event for a breast cancer charity, and found herself on the front page of the local newspaper with an Oompa Loompa!

Mary was playing trombone with Boobs and Brass, which raises money for breast cancer, as part of the traditional Whit Friday Marches in Saddleworth Moor which have taken place every June since at least the 1880s.

Mary said, ‘Boobs and Brass are an all-female charity brass band raises money for breast cancer, and from playing at the Whit Friday Marches in Saddleworth and collecting in the nearby villages we raised over £1500 for charity, which is fantastic.

Our percussion section dressed up for the occasion, and as we played the theme from Willy Wonka – and our bass drummer was dressed up as him – we of course had to have an Oompa Loompa!
Unfortunately this will be the last time I march, as I have arthritis in my spine and couldn’t walk after I had done this. Unless of course I work out how to play trombone and steer a mobility scooter at the same time’.

Earlier in the year, Mary played with opera singer Lesley Garrett and the Dore Male Voice Choir at Sheffield City Hall.

Mary’s next outing is in Brighouse, Calderdale, on 28 June 2014. To donate to Boobs and Brass, go to http://www.boobsandbrass.com/.
